CHAPTER 51

Flick read the message several times more to make sure she hadn’t misunderstood it. Then she placed her phone down on the counter and looked at Alex.

“Forget that cup of tea. I’m definitely having a glass of wine now,” she said with a grin. “And you’re having one with me. We’re celebrating.”

With the mugs of tea still full, she reached up into the cupboard and pulled down two crystal wine glasses. Then, taking a bottle that was already open from the fridge, poured them both a full glass. All the weight that had filled her only moments ago had evaporated. Of course, Nate was moving on with his life, and she was happy for him. After all, that was what she was doing now.

She lifted both glasses of wine and handed one to Alex before raising hers a little further in the air.

“To my first paid photography job.”

“To the first of many,” he replied as he clinked his glass against hers.

As Flick took a sip of her drink, she noticed how badly her cheeks ached from grinning. When had she last felt this good? This proud, she wondered momentarily as she took another sip. A couple of months ago, Evie had had her own solo line in the first school production of the year, and Flick had remembered her cheeks aching then, too. She’d been so proud of Evie. Proud to be Evie’s mother. In fact, every memory of pride that sprang to mind was associated with Evie. Her school reports. Her sailing skills. The way she looked after Luna so responsibly when she was just a tiny pup. Yes, Flick was regularly overcome with pride in her daughter. But being proud of herself was something she couldn’t remember experiencing in a very long time.

After yet another gulp of wine, she looked back at Alex, ready to discuss all the ins and outs of the upcoming shoot, when she noticed his glass remained untouched. Rather than drinking, he was staring straight at her.

“What? What is it?” she asked.

“You are absolutely magnificent, you know that?”

It was said with absolute sincerity. Not a hint of humour, or, despite how it could have come across, cheesiness either. Yet, Flick waved the comment away, feeling a heat of embarrassment colour her cheeks.

“I’m really not. I mean, magnificent people actually get the job they want to start with. They don’t wait until they’re thirty-eight to finally give it a try.”

“Some people live their entire lives and never go after their dream job at all. Trust me, you are absolutely incredible.”

He wanted to kiss her, she could tell that, but she could also tell he wasn’t going to. He had seen the state she was in only ten minutes beforehand, and she knew him well enough to know he would never do something someone could construe as taking advantage. Not after his error on their previous date. But she wanted this kiss just as much as he did. She placed her glass back on the countertop, then took Alex’s and placed it down beside hers.
